This newest adventure started on the weekend and is unfortunately still ongoing :( I took Rhett in to Emerg on Saturday when he had symptoms (since Friday) of a stiff and sore neck and a fever. He was thoroughly examined by the nicest doctor you could ask for!! The blood test showed significantly elevated white blood cell count and with his other symptoms the worry was he might have meningitis. They did a lumbar puncture to collect spinal fluid and this amazing kid did not even would not even cry!
Phil says this stubborn streak (from his side of the family) is good for something! Ha!!
Anyway, the doctor consulted with the Stollery Children's Hospital and before we had too much time to process the news we were off to the city for further assessment. This was my second time in the back of an ambulance ... but this time not as a patient. It was seriously 10 times rougher than I remembered. One time we even got air! Woke Rhett right up and that is his favorite part of this whole adventure! I should clarify this was not a racing trip with sirens or anything! It was long and rather slow and we were probably doing 70 km/hr when we hit the pothole! I think we were behind some wide load rig for miles. Took forever.
Rhett and I got really good at waiting and waiting some more. We were impressed with the hospital and the friendly staff but nothing is quick.
We came back home on Sunday night ... special delivery by Grandpa and Grandma. I was going to say it was a much more comfortable ride, until we got 5 minutes out of the city and Rhett threw up over everything! After a clean up stop we were back on the road. Once you got used to the aroma it was a comfortable ride :)
The ongoing part of the story is that Rhett was prescribed this absolutely disgusting antibiotic that he could not get down, or keep down. So on Monday afternoon we were back in Emerg ... hoping for another alternative. The alternative was IV antibiotics every 12 hours ... with some liquid gold medication to keep the nausea under control. You should see how little of the stuff the pharmacy gave me .. less than 1/4 cup and it cost almost $50.00. I understand it is what people on chemo take ... and a lot more than he takes. WOW.
So my super trooper patient is starting to weary of going to the hospital. And the sad part is he's still not really better. He is most comfortable laying down so he does that 90 percent of the day ... even at the table. His lymph glands are so swollen and his neck painful to move. We are off again to the hospital for his IV very shortly. Poor guy. Hoping we get some test results back tomorrow. Right now the are calling it lymphadenitis ? I think.
The pics are off my phone ... not great quality and I was having trouble downloading them from my phone to my new computer.
